Gardening

Beginning your Garden

Gardening in MNA is very important. You will need crops to complete quests and make items to decorate your plot. The plants you grow will also be used to make more seeds of the same kind or can also be used for fishing bait. Produce both fruits and types of flowers can also be sold in your own personal market or on the global market for Bjorn or Alice coins.

MNA has also introduced Moxie and character leveling to the game. Moxie is the ability to eat some of the crops we plant and gain Moxie which will allow us to earn experience EXP. At this point in time it has no added benefit to how we play the game. We have been told that is still coming.

By following the quest line you will learn the basics. To begin, talk to Hae-Won on your plot to begin the quest line.

Quest: Where the sprouts start

Hae-Won is the NPC that introduces you to gardening. The next set of quests will teach you how to create seeds, plant them, care for them and harvest them.

Alice will ask you to speak to Ivan to buy a flute from him. He is located just below the City Hall.

Talk to Ivan to complete the first part of the quest. Press E to shop with him and click on the Shop option with the shopping cart symbol. You’ll need to listen him talk for one more screen after you select the shop. Next, select the Classic Lummel Flute from his shop and then click Purchase.

Select the flute from Ivan's shop.
Buying a flute

Return to Alice to complete quest. She is just up the stairs from Ivan.

How to use the Flute

Fluting in the game give you the opportunity of receiving extra seed(s) and or fish bait. These extras are random. You cannot flute your own garden, but your neighbors can come to your land and flute your plants.

Extra resources received when the Sol Birch plant was harvested

You can use your flute 5 times per day, and only one time on an individual land. We are not able to flute a neighbors land twice in one day. A day in My Neighbor Alice is 24 hours.

If you are lucky enough to have a neighbor who has “shared” land with you; you have become a renter or a co-owner. Then you will decide between you and the other person who will be able to plant, water, and harvest the crops on this shared land, but you will NOT be able to flute since you are essentially a co-owner of the land.

Select “R” to open your tool wheel and select your flute.

Selecting your flute

You can flute one 5×5 square area. Please be careful to look for the GREEN lines that will define the 5×5 square before you begin your flute. The picture below shows the position of the green 5×5 square is out by two rows and so will not cover all possible plants.

Incorrect placement of your fluting range

Select your flute and move your avatar using your a, d, w, or s keys into the position of your 5×5 area. Next you will left click the mouse and watch for the yellow circle to form around the plants. Hold it until the yellow circle is completed. Be careful that you hold the mouse click until the yellow circle is completed, otherwise you will not have fluted the crop.

The yellow line must become a full circle for the crop to be fluted

Please note that once the plant has been fluted after a few seconds there will be a musical note above it.

The musical notes mean the crop has been fluted

How to get someone to flute your crops

Select “m”. This will bring up the world map. Select your plot.

The world map

Select the chat bubble, shown by arrow points at in this picture below. This action will put your plot number into the game chat.

Adding your plot number to the in-game chat

It will say “Come visit this land” and your neighbors then can select your plot number in chat and go directly to your land to flute your crops. You will follow the same process if you wish to do the same for them and give their plants a flute. Place your mouse over the number in the chat to select their land number in chat and then select the Travel button to travel to their land.

Watering your garden

You must water your crops to have them grow and you can also water other people’s plants for them. The cost to you is only the wear on your watering can. The more you use it to water plants, the more often you will need to craft a new one.

As you explore the Archipelago don’t water plants you see without asking. Some plants are grown for landscaping and decorations and owners may prefer to have them of a certain size.

To water your plants you select “R”, and on the wheel choose the watering can.

Selecting the watering can

Select a single plant to water. Hold the left mouse until you see that the blue circle has completed going around. If you do not hold it down until the completion of the circle, the watering will not be completed and you must start over.

Watering your plant

When the blue line has completed its full turn around, then the circle around the plant will no longer be red. It will be grey and the watering of this plant is done. Different plants have different cycles. You can tell how many times watering cycles the plant will require by the numbers above the plant. 0/3 means there are three eight hour periods in this crops growing cycle.

Grey circle shows your crop has been watered for that cycle

Where to till and how to organize your garden

It is important to plant your garden in a way that suits you and your land. Using the Landscaping feature and making a flat area is often a good idea. You receive the blueprint for the Landscaping voucher early in the questline from Alice. Best practice is to plant seeds in a 5×5 section.

An example of a 5×5 section of tilled soil

Types of soil

You will notice in the screenshot above that there are different shades of brown. The darker the brown the better quality of soil. Darker squares are likely produce a greater number of crops compared to the lighter brown colored ones.

Planting 2×2

Planting 2×2 means in a 4 square pattern. A group of 4 of the same seeds grow together to form a larger plant to harvest and a greater yield is often the result. It is important to note that if you forget to water one of the four in the group, you will have to wait until that one plant has been fully watered for it to group together to form the larger plant.

Harvesting your garden

A crop is ready for harvest when the broken circle around it is comlete. The upper plant in the picture below can be harvested. The plant below it is not ready. The broken circle is still red and green and only 1 out of 5 watering cycles has been completed.

One plant is ready for harvest and one plant is not ready for harvest yet

Harvesting bag can be crafted on your anvil. To begin to harvest press “r” and select your harvesting bag from the tool wheel.

Selecting your harvesting pouch

Select the plant you wish to harvest and hold the left click down until it is a full yellow circle. If you don’t let the yellow line go around completely then the plant will remain unharvested.

Yellow line must go around the completely to harvest the plant

Once the yellow line has gone fully around the circle, there will be a clouds of purple swirling dust.

Purple swirling dust showing the plant is being harvested

Once the plant has been harvested a screen will pop up showing your yield. In the image below, you received a saucco tree seed, 31 sol birch fruits and one fish bait.

A good harvest yield

The extras received from a fluted crop is random. Sometimes more and sometimes less. Here is another example. A much larger group of extras from a harvested pumpas crop.

Types and Tiers of crops

There are three different levels of plants for your garden. Each level has four different types of crop you can grow. The game provides a variety of vegetables, fruits, flowers, trees and Mysterious Seeds. Planting, watering and harvesting all crops can be done with any level of tools.

Trees and shrub seeds

To get seeds for the plants below, you will notice that you need plants themselves. To obtain the first set of seeds, you will have to either buy them from the Global Market or from a neighbor’s market. You may also get lucky, when you harvest your garden that has been fluted, by noticing a few suprise seeds. When crops are fluted they have an opportunity for extras when harvested.

Wild Seeds

When you first begin to play My Neighbor Alice you will receive three Wild Seeds. After that, wild seeds are usually purchased from Ivan in Lummestad or made from the seed dispenser. They can also be a reward for completing a quest. When planted, they produce one seed of plants listed above or flowers and trees. The seed distribution is random.

Mysterious Seeds

Mysterious fruit

Mysterious Seeds are a special Tier 4 crop that, once planted, will produce a single Tier 4 fruit. While they only ever yield one fruit, you can use the flute on them for a chance to receive extra bait or normal seeds.

These crops take two weeks to harvest. After watering, you’ll need to wait 24 hours before the next watering cycle—a total of 14 cycles is required.

The fruit they produce falls into one of two categories:

Moxie Capacity Upgrade – permanently increases the size of your Moxie bar (how much Moxie you can hold).

Bonus Moxie Upgrade – permanently increases the amount of experience you gain for each action when using Moxie.

Mysterious Seeds can be purchased on open markets like Binance, but please note that these platforms are not affiliated with My Neighbor Alice, and any transactions made there are at your own risk.

Alternatively, you can buy them safely from other players via the My Neighbor Alice myneighboralice.com website marketplace or the in-game marketplace.

Tip and Tricks for your Garden

Choose a special location for a 2×2 and one of your special seeds and don’t harvest it. This will allow it to become part of your lands decor and landscaping. There are many examples of how this is done. Travel the Archipelago to see what your neighbors have done for ideas.

Gentle raindrop peppers and a hot commodity for the Tier Three Tools so you should grow them as soon as you can. You will need 100 to gather all the tier three tools.

Your Garden can easily become a good money earner for you. You can accumulate both bjorn and Alice. Use the global market to your advantage or make a deal privately using your own Market on your land. Using our helpful guide is a must. Market

Note that if you place your seeds on higher ground, you will not be able to raise, or lower the squares underneath it in landscape mode. You will only be able to landscape that spot when you have harvested your crop.

Keeping your garden alive and growing is a must in My Neighbor Alice. The produce you harvest will be necessary for fish bait, moxie, daily quests from Oli and many of the general quests. Make sure you check out the items in both your outdoor and indoor crafting tables and the sewing machine table because many items require the tier one tree plants as well.
